Plus, people here are crazy about group messaging, and WhatsApp had better tools for that long before others. IMessage would take like a year to launch too, so this short interval was enough for WhatsApp to popularize even on iPhones. Having your saved contacts already as a “friend” on WhatsApp made it super easy for anyone to just download it and use it straight away, as opposed to creating a new account in some other app. Combine that when smartphones became affordable for the general public, data plans were already available at better rates than the usual text plans. We’d be super economical with our conversation lol. So regular texting was never as big as it was in the us. I think basically because most people started with androids, specially in lower income classes, and at least here our carriers never offered decent text plans in the pre iPhone era. The idea of switching to imessage and then falling back on texting for those who don't have imessage seems kind of crazy to me. I think I average about 1 conversation every 2-3 months over text. My most recent actual use of the texting app for communication was 3 months ago when I moved and I talked to the moving guy about when/where to meet. Looking at my texts they are as follows: Paypal, Bank, insurance, bank, bank, postal office, doctors appointment reminder, package pickup reminder, bank, e scooter app, doctor reminder, vet reminder, public transport app, ikea app, ikea app, transport app. I live in Finland and literally the only text messages I get ever are from 2 factor authentication services or the government or something. "Hey guys, lets all use a service that is about the same but also excludes a couple of us?" ![]() How would you even begin to tell your friends "lets go to iMessage" when 2 of them have androids and everyone is already sending messages just fine using whatsapp? The flaw of iMessege is that not everyone can get it. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. If you'd like to view their content together, click here.
